Diesel Emergency Generators

Diesel Emergency Generators

There are a lot of factors to take into account when choosing your generator. So let’s look at a few pros and cons of diesel emergency generators.

Pros:

– Diesel is an efficient fuel. More so than natural gas or propane.

– Natural Gas can be shut off in time of emergencies, whereas your diesel generator will likely have it’s own tank.

– Diesel engines are extremely durable and long lasting.

– Most diesel generators up to around 500 kw will likely be using John Deere engines. Parts should be fairly easy to find.

– Diesel units can be mounted to trailers for ease of moving. Natural gas generators wouldn’t be useful in this manner since you wouldn’t have a fuel supply to connect to quickly.

Cons:

– Diesel requires you to refill the fuel tank. With natural gas, it’s piped in and you don’t have to worry about running out of fuel.

– In emergency situations, gas stations may close. That makes it a little more difficult for you to get fuel for your generator!

– For smaller units, diesel is a more expensive up front cost.

– While diesel is a more efficient fuel, it is also more expensive. As of now, it’s much cheaper to use natural gas, even accounting for needing much more to achieve the same output.

In any case, it’s up to the customer to decide if a diesel emergency generator is the right way to go. Generators are definitely not a one size fits all purchase, so it’s best to know what the most important factors are for you and your situation. Armed with that information, you’ll be able to compare generators and quotes in a side-by-side way, instead of trying to compare completely different units.
